European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
