British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages down to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
