Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
