In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
