People who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope following their first meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Advocated

The organization is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this persistent problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an unprecedented summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is personal. The North American activist revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to collaborate with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty countries, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

They added the Pope was "tender" about their own story and seemed "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is hoping that revisions to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they voiced optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the correct path," they stated.

Hickey added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
